This grass-like plant is a common native growing all along the east coast of Australia.
It is described as an ‘essential’ bush tucker plant. The young leaves can be pulled out in clumps and white ends chewed, tasting like fresh green peas.
Flowering in early spring to summer, the flowers are edible and the seeds can be pounded to make flour.
Aboriginal people also used the tough leaves for weaving baskets, mats and eel traps.
